Coaching vs counselling

Couples coaching vs counselling: why talking isn't the same as changing

Many of the couples Marc works with have already tried counselling. They talked a lot, understood a lot, and still ended up having the same fight. Here's how couples coaching is different, and how to know which one you need.

The short answer: couples counselling and therapy help you understand and heal what went wrong, and are essential where there is trauma, mental illness or a safety concern. Couples coaching is structured, practical and forward-focused. It helps you see the pattern you are caught in, learn the skills to break it, and put those skills into practice every week, with support between sessions, until the change sticks.

Side by side

Every practitioner is different, so treat this as a general guide to how each approach typically works.

Why it works

Five reasons coaching creates change that lasts

1

Insight is not the finish line

Understanding why you fight doesn't stop the fight. Coaching treats insight as the starting point and focuses on what you will do differently, word for word, the next time the trigger hits.

2

Both partners get private time

In joint sessions, people perform, defend and protect. Weekly individual sessions give each partner a safe place to be honest and do their own work, so joint sessions move faster.

3

Intensity beats occasional appointments

Deep patterns don't change in one hour a fortnight. With up to seven touchpoints a week, coaching works like any serious transformation: consistent practice, feedback and course correction.

4

Help when it actually matters

The moment a fight starts is when you most need support. Short support calls between sessions help you repair in real time, instead of losing days to distance and resentment.

5

Possibility, not pathology

Coaching assumes you are not broken. Many people, especially men and high achievers, find "coaching" easier to say yes to than "therapy", which means both partners actually show up.

Honest advice

When counselling or therapy is the right choice

Coaching is powerful, and it isn't for everyone. Marc is a certified coach, not a psychologist, counsellor or therapist. He screens for safety at the start and will refer you to clinical support when that is what you need. Choose a psychologist or therapist first if:

  • there is physical violence, intimidation, coercive control or you feel unsafe
  • either partner is in a mental health crisis, or has thoughts of self-harm
  • there is active addiction that needs treatment
  • trauma needs clinical treatment before relationship work can begin

Coaching can also work alongside individual therapy, and many clients do both.

Questions about coaching and counselling

How is couples coaching different from counselling or therapy?

Counselling and therapy are often open-ended and focus on exploring the past, emotional healing and mental health. Couples coaching is structured, forward-focused and practical: you identify the pattern you are caught in, learn the skills to interrupt it, and put a clear plan in place for the relationship you both want. With Marc you also get individual and joint sessions plus support between sessions, so change happens in real life, not only in the room.

We've tried counselling before and nothing changed. Why would this be different?

Many couples come to Marc after counselling that felt like talking in circles. Coaching is built around action: a defined program, weekly individual sessions so each partner can be honest, joint sessions to practise new ways of relating, and short support calls when things flare up between sessions. The focus is on changing the pattern, not just understanding it.

When is therapy the better choice?

Coaching is not a substitute for clinical care. If there is family violence, coercive control, active addiction, a mental health crisis or trauma that needs clinical treatment, a psychologist or therapist is the right first step. Marc screens for safety and will refer you on when that is what you need, and coaching can work alongside therapy where appropriate.

Is Marc a counsellor or psychologist?

No. Marc is a professionally certified coach: a Certified Couples Master Coach trained and mentored by Dee Tozer, and a Certified Transformation Coach and Professional Coach with The Coaching Institute.
